100 unit insulin syringe (1 mL)

A 1 mL (100 unit) insulin syringe holds 100 units, which is 1 mL. Each unit is 0.01 mL. Most 1 mL syringes have a line every 2 units, with numbers at every 5 or 10 units.

100 units = 1 mL · 1 unit = 0.01 mL

How to read it

  1. Hold the syringe with the needle pointing up and the scale facing you.
  2. Find the number of units you need. Count the small lines from the nearest number: each line is 2 units.
  3. Pull the plunger until the top edge of the dark stopper, the side nearest the needle, sits on that line. Tap out air bubbles and check again.

When to pick the 1 mL size

The 1 mL syringe fits large volumes, but its lines are 2 units apart, so doses under 10 units are hard to read precisely.
