Insulin syringe units to mL

Insulin syringes are marked in units, not milliliters. On a U-100 syringe the conversion is always the same: 100 units = 1 mL, so 1 unit = 0.01 mL.

1 mL = 100 units · 1 unit = 0.01 mL

mL to units

Multiply milliliters by 100. 0.1 mL = 10 units, 0.25 mL = 25 units, 0.5 mL = 50 units, 1 mL = 100 units.

What the units mean for your vial

Units only measure volume. How much substance sits in those units depends on how much powder is in the vial and how much water you mixed it with. A 10 mg vial mixed with 2 mL of water holds 5 mg per mL, so 10 units (0.1 mL) carry 0.5 mg. The same 10 units from a vial mixed with 1 mL carry 1 mg.

Questions

How many units are in 1 mL on an insulin syringe?

100 units. U-100 insulin syringes are scaled so that 100 units equal 1 mL.

How many mL is 10 units on an insulin syringe?

0.1 mL. On a U-100 syringe each unit is 0.01 mL.

Is the conversion the same for 0.3, 0.5 and 1 mL syringes?

Yes, for U-100 syringes. The size only changes how many units fit in the barrel: 30, 50 or 100.

Does this work for U-40 or U-500 syringes?

No. U-40 syringes hold 40 units per mL and U-500 syringes are scaled differently. Check the U number printed on the box.
